Our History

Colonial Animal Hospital has been a fixture of Midtown Springfield Virginia for over 40 years. The Hospital was founded by Dr. Norman Breslauer in the early 1960s. The hospital was originally located in Alexandria, VA. The hospital then moved to the corner of Franconia and Loisdale Roads in Springfield (currently the location of the Hilton Hotel). In 1965 the hospital moved to a brand new state of the art facility at 6733 Commerce Street. In December 1965 Dr. Robert Moss became a partner in the practice. Nine years later Dr. Breslauer retired and Dr. Gary Banas became a partner.

In August 2005, Drs. Moss and Banas retired and sold the practice to Drs. Roderick Hudson and Allison Fennell. With the new redevelopment planned for Midtown Springfield, Colonial Animal Hospital was on the move again. On August 1st, 2006 the hospital moved to a brand new facility in Springfield Plaza  (Trader Joe’s and GIant Shopping Center) on Old Keene Mill Road (6320 Springfield Plaza). Dr. Hudson retired in 2019 and Dr. Fennell became the sole owner. Dr. Fennell plans to uphold the standards of the hospital and continue to remain a fixture of the Springfield business community for decades to come.
